As electric vehicles (EVs) continue dominating Los Angeles roads, many drivers seize the opportunity to make their EV ownership journey more cost-effective through EV tax credits. But what if you want to get an affordable pre-owned EV? Do used EVs qualify for a tax credit? Yes! The federal used clean vehicle credit, a tax credit for pre-owned electric vehicles, offers significant savings. This piece delves into the ins and outs of the used federal EV tax credit and outlines eligibility requirements.

Understanding the Used Federal EV Tax Credit

The used federal EV tax credit is a government-initiated tax relief mechanism for pre-owned electric vehicle purchases. It is a great opportunity for eligible Huntington Park drivers to enjoy sizable savings, making EV ownership more achievable and wallet-friendly. The tax credit equals 30% of the purchase price, capping at $4,000.

Criteria for Vehicles Under the Used Electric Vehicle Tax Credit

Used EVs do qualify for a tax credit, but they must meet certain criteria. Per the IRS, a vehicle must meet the following conditions to be eligible for the used clean car credit:

  1. The vehicle’s selling price should not exceed $25,000.
  2. The car should be at least two years older than the present year. For instance, a 2022 or older model is required for eligibility in 2024.
  3. No vehicle transfer to a qualified buyer should occur post-August 16, 2022.
  4. The vehicle’s gross weight rating must be under 14,000 pounds.
  5. It must be a qualified fuel cell vehicle (FCV) or a plug-in EV having a battery capacity of at least 7 kilowatt hours.
  6. The vehicle’s primary use must be within the United States.

Who Can Benefit from the Used EV Tax Credit?

To secure the used clean car credit, potential owners must adhere to the following criteria:

  1. Purchase the vehicle for personal usage, not for resale.
  2. Not be the vehicle’s first owner.
  3. Not be claimed as a dependent on another individual’s tax return.
  4. Not have availed another used clean vehicle credit within three years prior to the purchase date.
  5. Have a modified adjusted gross income (AGI) not exceeding: $150,000 for married couples filing jointly or a surviving spouse, $112,500 for head of household, or $75,000 for all other filers.

To stake your claim on the used clean car credit, complete Form 8936, titled ‘Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit’ and submit it with your tax return for the year you became the vehicle’s owner. Remember to provide the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the form.
